How Can God Love Me?

Have you ever heard someone say or maybe even said this yourself, “If I walked across the threshold of the church it would burn to the ground.”  Many of us think that actions we have been involved in would make God hate us or disown us.  We may even wonder how He could possibly even love me at all.

The simple truth is that nothing can separate us from God’s love.  That is stated in Romans 8:38-39 which reads, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Enough said there.

The next point is taken from a sermon given by Pastor Mac Lake at Seacoast Church.  First a story, I remember back to when I was a kid I did some stupid stuff.  When I was about 3, my mother spent days painting all the baseboards in our house and they looked great.  I showed my appreciation by riding my tricycle into them and scratching the paint which destroyed the look she worked so hard to achieve.  Then again when I was 8 or 9 I put a hole in my bedroom wall.

I have taken many of my parents’ gifts for granted.  Being rough with toys or “modifying” them vastly reduced their service life.  Looking back I am sure that I really hurt my parents’ feelings sometimes and have done things that have not been appreciative to the love they have shown.  Never once did they sit me down and say, “Joe, we are tired of you.  We want you out of our lives!  You’re disowned!”

That is because a parent’s love is powerful and they know how to separate the act from the person.  They know that children are going to do things like this.  Now put yourself in God’s shoes.  He is perfect and loves unconditionally.  God hates sin, not us as individuals.  He knows that we are going to sin but just like our parents he will continue to love us.

In the book of Genesis, it says that we our created in God’s image.  Have you ever drew a picture, wrote a paper, built a birdhouse or completed any other type of project?  You feel very proud of that macaroni picture that you did with glitter and glue.  It looked nothing like a house but, you still loved it.

Can you imagine creating a person cell by cell?  Giving each a unique personality and even a one-of-a-kind fingerprint!  It is no wonder that God loves us unconditionally; we are all His macaroni pictures.  Even though we sin quite often, He still is loves us even if we are not the image of perfection.  Nothing can separate us from His love.
