Should I Invest in Stocks?

 ShareBuilder-Welcome page

Many people ask the question as to whether or not they should invest in stocks and bonds.  The simple answer is yes.  There are many concerns and reasons for not wanting to do so.

Some experts suggest subtracting your age from 120.  The number you arrive at should be the percentage of your money that you invest each month that is to be used for stocks.  The remainder should be placed in bonds and savings accounts.  However, many of us have reasons not to invest.

One reason is that there is not enough money left over each month to save or invest.  There are two things that we never have enough of; time and money.  However, if we make even a little effort each month of even $50, that is $600 after a year.  Eventually, more money will free itself and you can invest even more.

In everything you do, if you are not moving forward you are not moving.  Newton said that, “objects in motion remain in motion, objects at rest remain at rest.”  That is not only true for apples falling from trees, it is also true for your bank account.  The money that you invest goes into motion and gains interest and momentum in the right direction.

Another reason is that there is too much debt right now to worry about investing.  If you are in that situation I would recommend sitting down with an advisor and finding a way to get out of that situation.  The goal for all of us is to not work for our money, but to have our money work for us!  And that is not simply dreaming.

The final reason we will discuss is that there is a certain intimidation involved in investing and the stock market.  There are so many different stocks and nuances that make things extremely difficult to understand.  There are many books out there written by experts to get you educated.  Also, see the next article on this site, Stocks 101, for some basic knowledge from a rookie investor.

The key to all of this is that you need to be investing for your future.  There will most likely not be many programs offered by our government to support us in retirement.  Even if there are, retirement age is rising and rising.  I do not know about you but I do not want to work till I am 70 or even 60 for that matter, to just pay for my debts.
